Meta's Quest 3 Takes on Apple Vision Pro: Zuckerberg's Bold Comparison

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has sparked a heated debate in the tech world by directly comparing the newly launched Meta Quest 3 to Apple's Vision Pro. In a candid Instagram video, Zuckerberg outlined several reasons why he believes the Quest 3 outshines its Apple counterpart, particularly in the realm of mixed reality.

Priced at $500, the Quest 3 is significantly more affordable than the Vision Pro, which Zuckerberg points out is "7x less expensive." He emphasizes that the Quest 3 offers high-quality passthrough with large screens, akin to the Vision Pro, but with added advantages. The Meta headset boasts a lighter design, 120 grams lighter than the Vision Pro, offering a wire-free experience that enhances user mobility.

Furthermore, Zuckerberg highlights the Quest 3's superior field of view, brighter screen, and crisper visuals with less motion blur. The headset also features precision controllers and more accurate hand tracking, enriching the user experience. One of its most compelling selling points is its extensive content library, which includes watching YouTube and playing Xbox games.

Zuckerberg also critiqued Apple for the trade-offs made to achieve a higher resolution screen in the Vision Pro, such as compromised comfort and ergonomics. He expressed his ambition for Meta's devices to lead the new generation of computing, advocating for an open model of technology similar to Microsoft's success in the PC era.

The Quest 3, which launched in October, is equipped with two 2K LCD panels, Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, 8GB RAM, and Touch Plus controllers. It weighs 515 grams and does not require a separate battery pack, unlike the Vision Pro, which weighs between 600 and 650 grams and features 4K microLED displays.

Meta's lineup of headsets includes the Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. With rumours suggesting that Apple's next-generation headset will be more affordable, the competition in the mixed-reality market is heating up. Apple CEO Tim Cook defended the Vision Pro's price by describing it as "tomorrow's technology today," setting the stage for an ongoing battle between the open and closed models of the tech giants.
