OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stepped down from the company's safety and security committee, a decision made to ensure the panel's independence. The committee will now comprise independent board members, addressing concerns over potential conflicts of interest with the CEO's involvement.
Zico Kolter, director of Carnegie Mellon's machine learning department, will chair the committee. Other members include Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, retired U.S. Army General and former NSA head Paul Nakasone, and former Sony general counsel Nicole Seligman. The committee has oversight on safety for OpenAI’s major AI models, including the authority to delay their release if needed.
OpenAI stated the committee recently reviewed the safety of its o1 model, known internally as Strawberry, which was rated as a "medium risk." The company also implements the committee’s recommendations to increase transparency and unify security practices across its product teams. The committee’s creation earlier this year followed internal employee departures linked to safety concerns, and it was strengthened by the addition of Nakasone in June.
