OpenAI's ChatGPT Hits 200 Million Weekly Users, Doubling in a Year - Morning Toasts

OpenAI revealed on Thursday that ChatGPT, its flagship generative AI chatbot, now boasts over 200 million weekly active users, doubling its user base from a year ago. This milestone underscores ChatGPT's continued dominance in the rapidly evolving field of AI chatbots, even as competition intensifies among tech giants.

The surge in ChatGPT usage comes as companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta aggressively update and promote their own AI tools in an attempt to capture more market share. Despite this competitive landscape, OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains a leader, cementing its role as a go-to tool for individual users and businesses.

In addition to its growing user base, OpenAI reported that 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now utilizing its products, reflecting the widespread adoption of AI technology in the corporate world. OpenAI’s automated API usage has also seen significant growth, doubling since the introduction of GPT-4o mini in July.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the impact that ChatGPT is having across various sectors. "People are using our tools now as a part of their daily lives, making a real difference in areas like healthcare and education—whether it's helping with routine tasks, solving hard problems, or unlocking creativity," Altman said in a statement to Axios.

Meta's announcement on the same day further highlighted the competitive nature of the generative AI space, noting that the adoption of its open-source Llama models has also seen rapid growth. Meta reported that usage at significant cloud service providers doubled between May and July following the release of Llama 3.1, indicating the intense race to attract and retain users in this booming industry.

As the competition among AI platforms heats up, ChatGPT's continued growth highlights its pivotal role in the daily lives of millions of users and its importance in the broader AI ecosystem. With the industry evolving rapidly, the following year could bring even more changes and innovations in how people interact with AI tools.
